Lost and Found

from 50.00

During a trip to the Grand Canyon in March 2016, my friends and I made our first stop at the White Sands National Monument in New Mexico.  Sand dunes as far as the eye could see?  Count me in.  Problem was, about 2 hours before we arrived we started to notice the winds picking up, so much so that smallish desert tornadoes starting popping up everywhere as we drove with enough force to rock the car.  We figured it would make for some interesting photography but alas, it turned out to be a disaster filling my car, and our gear; with tons of sand.  Defeated, we parked a few miles down the street and camped for free on BLM land for the night determined to return the next day.  What a difference 12 hours makes.  We woke to temps in the low 40's and pristine clear blue skies, a perfect backdrop for the perfectly white dunes.  Not to mention, all of the wind had blown enough sand around that at 800 AM when the park opened, there was virtually no sign of human foot steps anywhere to be found.  The size of this park in the middle of barren western New Mexico is hard to describe and a geological oddity.
