Usage & Licensing
Image usage & licensing, in plain English
When you license commercial images, you're paying for how, where, and how long you use them — not just the photos themselves. Every quote states the usage included; broader or longer use is priced in up front, so there are no surprises later.
What usage rights actually mean
A usage right is permission to use an image in a specific way — your website, organic social, paid advertising, packaging, or out-of-home. The photograph is the same; what changes is the value of the use. That's why licensing is quoted alongside production: a product shot destined for a national ad campaign is licensed differently than the same shot used only on a product page.
How licensing periods work
Advertising and paid-media licenses usually run for a set term — often one to two years — and can be renewed when the campaign continues. Everyday uses like your own website and organic social are typically granted for the life of the product or campaign, so your core marketing is covered without renewals.
What a buyout is
A buyout bundles most or all uses into a single broad license for an extended or unlimited term. It costs more up front but removes the need to track individual usages — a good fit for wide-reaching, long-running campaigns or brands that want maximum flexibility.
What's included by default
Every project quote spells out the usage included — no fine print. By default, commercial clients receive the rights needed for their stated purpose, commonly web, e-commerce and PDP, and organic social. Broader or longer use is simply added to the estimate before we shoot, and the photographer retains copyright unless a broader transfer is agreed.
Licensing FAQ
What are usage rights?
Usage rights define how, where, and how long you may use an image — for example web and social, paid advertising, packaging, or out-of-home. Licensing prices the use, not just the photo, so the same image can carry different terms for different purposes.
How do licensing periods work?
A license typically runs for a stated term — often one to two years for advertising use — after which it can be renewed. Ongoing, non-advertising uses like your own website and organic social are usually granted for the life of the product or campaign.
What is a buyout?
A buyout is a broad license that bundles most or all uses for an extended or unlimited term, so you don't track individual usages. It costs more up front but simplifies long-term, wide-reaching campaigns.
What's included by default?
Every quote states the usage included. By default, commercial clients receive the rights needed for their stated purpose — commonly web, e-commerce/PDP, and organic social. Broader or longer use (paid media, packaging, out-of-home) is simply priced in up front.
Do you keep the copyright?
As with most commercial photography, the photographer retains copyright and grants you a license to use the images. Broader ownership, exclusivity, or a full buyout can be arranged and is quoted transparently.
